Atlantis is a platform for multimedia collection management and portal construction. Atlantis has a modular design and focuses on expandability, flexibility and openness. This creates a solution that offers many options for configuration to your own wishes and expansion for the future. This platform is mainly used for collection management and portal construction for archive institutions, museums, archaeological institutions and collection management organizations.
The Atlantis framework can be expanded with plug-ins with modules, services and portal functions.
A wide range of collections, ranging from archive and image collections to handwritten and printed sources, art and literature, construction files, deeds and records can be managed and made available with Atlantis.
Image material in the broadest possible sense can be housed, unlocked and published in an Atlantis image bank. These can include photos, slides, negatives, drawings, prints, postcards, flyers, maps, sound material, moving image, text documents, spreadsheets and more. Essentially, all the material you have at your disposal can be brought together here, unlocked and published. Unlocking the material’s potential can be done by using a formal descriptive structure for files, such as the GABOS list of elements or Dublin Core. You could also use your own descriptive structures, or derivatives of generic ones.
This solution supports the tasks undertaken on archive material: from acquisition and cataloguing through saving at depot to responding to public applications to view, borrow or use the material. Search queries and hierarchical navigation systems supply the information structurally and in its context. It is possible to work with the international standards ISAD(G), ISAAR(CPF), ISDF and/or derivative descriptive forms and levels of description.
Official documents and registers occur in many forms, including registers of births, marriages and deaths; population records; land registries; and planning permission and licences for buildings or nuisances. These sources are a treasure trove of information for professional and amateur genealogists alike. They can be described and made available down to the level of individual register or document. To reflect the various types of official document and register, you can define your own descriptive fields, which makes this module a highly versatile one.
For newspapers, periodicals, correspondence and other printed sources, the option exists in the Printed Sources module to subject the texts to optical character recognition (OCR), making them indexable and searchable. Advanced query methods allow retrieval of the information being sought for. Search terms found are highlighted on the page images and are presented in an internet display-optimised format.
The Construction Dossiers module brings together digitised documents concerned with the process of applications for building permits, architectural drawings and pertinent metadata. This makes the dossiers searchable, consultable and reproducible for and by the general public. Municipal councils publishing the documents have the option of linking to the MijnAdres portal (www.mijnadres.org), which will make their construction dossiers available from a Netherlands-wide platform.
The Virtual Reading Room module offers the unique functionality of using the internet to query the same microfiches and microfilm content that would otherwise be available on terminals in reading rooms. From microfiches or microfilms of registers, researchers can navigate straight across to the right microfiche of the actual source. This makes research easier than it has been in the era of non-networked reading room terminals. In addition, digitising microfiches and microfilms is far cheaper than digitising all the original source material, so the investment soon pays for itself.
The Newspapers and Magazines module is an excellent help when collecting and making available interesting newspaper and magazine articles, such as those on the history of buildings, streets, events, personages, districts and regions. The module lets articles be succinctly described and supplied in a reading room terminal or on the internet.
From now on, you can manage your collection 100% online using Atlantis Museum. Your collection is unique, and so are the people who work with it. Atlantis Museum has been developed with just one aim in mind: to let you manage your collections simply and entirely web-based, on the basis of industry standards such as Spectrum, but also to let you fully manage the processes.
The basic module of Atlantis Museum can be extended using other modules, including those for managing image collections, archives, printed sources, library catalogues, handwritten sources, dossiers and other mixed collections. Together, the various modules form a single integrated multimedia information system in which your collections can be managed both separately and jointly.
Atlantis Museum is standard software, but one which feels like a custom build. There is also the option of ordering extra services (for a fee) which will ensure that your precious collection remains registered as well as it can be and that it can flexibly accrue authorisations, persistent identifiers or Google Maps.
BioXL is a module offering extensive applications for natural history collections. Developed in collaboration with world top-ten collection Naturalis, the module serves as Naturalis’ Central Registration System (CRS) for all its natural-history items.
Registration of archaeological items including projects, locations of finds and integration with Google Maps.
This is for the management of users, roles and rights, so that anyone seeking to obtain information from or perform functions in Atlantis can be validated and authorised, whatever their location or the system they are using. A user can have varying rights for different collections, items, forms, etc., which allows responsibilities and permissions to be apportioned and to be kept distinct.
Notes can be placed in the material made available in Atlantis. Visitors can also upload images, etc., to enrich an item already held.
Items of interest to the researcher can be grouped in his own archive in folders during his visit.
Using this module, visitors can order reproductions of items or apply to view items in the reading room.
In addition to the web shop functionality, reproductions ordered can be purchased electronically in the module.
As another supplement to the web shop and e-Payment functionality, orders can be downloaded directly.
Items housed in Atlantis are indexable by Google. This enables people to hit upon Atlantis items when performing Google searches. By clicking on at Atlantis result in a Google query return, the visitor will be taken to the presentation of the relevant item within your organisation’s own Atlantis public environment.
Integrating Atlantis with Google Maps allows items to be retrieved by performing a search in Google maps, and allows a user’s search results to be presented on a Google Map.
This is a thesaurus that fully meets the NEN and ISO norms, provided to support data entry or queries by archive managers or the public. You can also link Atlantis to external thesauruses, such as Getty AAT, Getty GEONAMES and the RCE Heritage Thesaurus.
The Statistics functionality registers which items have been consulted by whom. Coupled with a tool like Google Analytics, this enables you to gain comprehensive insight into how your website and your published items are being used.
This boosts efficiency of data entry by enabling more keyboard-friendly input forms and table-format entry, including bulk entry.
Professional heritage bodies can set up local, regional or national collaborative ventures by sharing means of managing and publishing collections held by small organisations (including voluntary organisations) and private individuals.
A full API is available to link Atlantis with proprietary content management systems (CMS), management environments, websites or portals.
This is a responsive HTML environment that can be integrated into websites and portals simply by linking to it and designing it as you see fit.
For telephones and tablets, an app for Android devices and an app for Apple devices are available and offer a responsive public environment. These apps can be disseminated via the relevant app stores.
